The nitrogen cycle is the process where beneficial bacteria convert toxic fish waste (ammonia) into nitrite, then into far less harmful nitrate — the single most important thing to understand in the hobby.
Livestock constantly produce ammonia, which is toxic in tiny amounts. Bacteria on your rock and in the filter turn ammonia → nitrite → nitrate, which you then export with water changes. "Cycling" means growing those bacteria before you rely on them.
