Beneficial bacteria are the nitrifying microbes — living mostly on your rock and in the sand and filter — that convert toxic ammonia and nitrite into safer nitrate.
They are the engine of the nitrogen cycle and the reason a "cycled" tank is safe for livestock. Protect them: never clean all your media at once or rinse it in hot tap water, and don't let the tank sit without an ammonia source.
