Cycling is the weeks-long process of growing the beneficial bacteria that run the nitrogen cycle, done before you add livestock — the tank is cycled when it turns a dose of ammonia to zero ammonia and zero nitrite within a day.
It usually takes 2–6 weeks; the water decides, not the calendar. Cycle fishless with an ammonia source or live rock — never on live fish, which is stressful and often fatal.
