Live rock

Also called: dry rock · reef rock

Live rock is porous calcium-carbonate rock that houses the beneficial bacteria and micro-life running your reef's biological filtration — the foundation of the aquascape.

"Live" rock arrives already colonised; "dry" rock is sterile and becomes live as your tank matures. Its huge porous surface area is where most of your nitrifying bacteria live, which is why it doubles as filtration and aquascape.
