Nitrate is the relatively harmless end product of the nitrogen cycle — but on a reef you want it low, not zero, around 2–15 ppm, because corals need some nutrients.
High nitrate fuels nuisance algae; stripping it to zero starves corals and invites dinoflagellates. Export it with water changes and feeding control, and let it settle in a low-but-not-zero band.
