New tank syndrome — the "ugly stage" — is the normal run of diatom and algae blooms a young reef goes through as it matures and finds its biological balance.
It looks alarming but it's temporary and expected, usually in the first weeks to months. Ride it out with patience, good flow and nutrient control rather than nuking it; a cleanup crew helps once the tank has settled a little.
