Diatoms are the brown, dusty film of algae that coats rock, sand and glass in a new tank — a harmless, normal phase of a maturing reef.
They feed on silicates and the surplus nutrients of a young system, and fade as the tank balances and those run down. Using RODI water (low silicate) and a little patience is the fix — not chemicals.
