The toadstool leather (Sarcophyton spp.) is the big, hardy soft coral that anchors many a first reef — a stalked "mushroom cap" that sways in the current and can grow to dinner-plate size. It's forgiving and fast, with two quirks to expect: it periodically shrinks and sheds a waxy film to clean itself (it looks like it's dying — it isn't), and it wages mild chemical warfare on nearby corals, so run carbon and give it space.

Signs something's wrong

A struggling coral is almost always telling you about light, flow or water — here's what to watch for:

  • Staying closed or shedding for more than a few days — a longer shed can signal water quality or irritation; test and check flow.
  • Not reopening, or tissue breaking down at the stalk — a real problem (rot); cut away affected tissue and check water.
  • Nearby corals declining — allelopathy; increase carbon, water changes and spacing.

Never

  • Never panic and toss a shedding leather — it's usually just cleaning itself.
  • Never pack it against other corals — it chemically suppresses them.
  • Never run it without carbon in a mixed-coral tank.
