Topping off is replacing water lost to evaporation with fresh RODI water — because only water evaporates, the salt stays behind and the tank would otherwise creep saltier.
Top off with fresh RODI, never saltwater, to hold salinity steady; water changes are separate. An auto top-off automates this and removes a major cause of salinity swing.
