Salinity is the concentration of dissolved salt in the water, measured in parts per thousand (ppt); a reef tank targets about 35 ppt — the same as natural seawater.
Salinity, not specific gravity, is the real target — measure it with a refractometer for accuracy. Corals and inverts want full-strength reef salinity; fish-only tanks can sit a little lower.
