Why Is My Coral Not Opening?

First: is it new or moved?
If you just added or repositioned the coral, staying closed for days to a couple of weeks is normal — it’s adjusting to your light, flow and water. The worst thing you can do is keep relocating it, which resets the adjustment every time. Pick a sensible spot, leave it, and give it time.

The checklist, in order
1. Stability — especially alkalinity. A swing in alkalinity (and to a lesser extent calcium and magnesium) is one of the most common reasons corals sulk, recede or close. 5. Nutrients. Bottomed-out nitrate and phosphate pale and close corals just like excess does — keep them low but not zero.
