Bird's Nest coral (Seriatopora hystrix) is a branching SPS of fine, needle-thin twigs — usually pink, green or cream — and one of the easiest branching SPS to start with. It grows fast, frags itself readily, and the one thing to respect is how fragile those thin branches are: they snap if bumped, and the tips brown or recede fast if light, flow or parameters swing.

The fish store gets these wrong
Common myths, kindly corrected — no shame for having believed them.
- “Bird's nest is too advanced for a first SPS.” It's actually one of the easiest branching SPS — a common gateway into branching corals — provided your tank is matured and your parameters are stable.
- “If it browned out it needs feeding.” A browning bird's nest almost always needs more (acclimated) light or more stable water — not spot-feeding.
- “Any strong flow is good for SPS.” The fine branches want random, turbulent flow, not one harsh direct jet — constant polyp retraction means it's too strong or too direct.
Before you buy
- A matured tank (≈6+ months, ideally older) with stable alk/Ca/Mg you test weekly.
- Space around it — brittle branches must not touch other corals, and it grows fast.
- Strong light and turbulent flow, both acclimated slowly for a new frag.
- Handle it by the base or plug, not the branches — they snap.
Signs something's wrong
A struggling coral is almost always telling you about light, flow or water — here's what to watch for:
- Tips browning or fading — light too low or not acclimated, or nutrients off.
- White skeleton appearing at branch bases and creeping up (STN) — a parameter swing or water-quality issue; frag ahead of the receding tissue and fix stability.
- Polyps staying retracted — flow too strong or too direct.
- Bleaching white all over — too much light too fast.
Never
- Never add it before the tank is matured and your parameters are stable — SPS punish swings.
- Never handle it by the branches — they're brittle and snap.
- Never let it touch neighbours — plan for fast growth and space it.
- Never make sudden light, flow or chemistry changes — acclimate everything.
Common birdsnest coral questions
Is bird's nest coral a good beginner SPS?
It's one of the easiest branching SPS and a common first branching coral — fast-growing and relatively forgiving — but it's still an SPS, so it needs a matured tank, stable alkalinity/calcium/magnesium, strong light and good turbulent flow.
Why is my bird's nest coral losing colour or receding?
Usually a parameter swing or an un-acclimated change in light or flow. White skeleton creeping up from the base is tissue necrosis (STN) — frag ahead of it and fix your stability; browning tips usually mean it needs more (acclimated) light.
How much light and flow does bird's nest need?
Strong light (roughly 200–400 PAR once acclimated — start around 50% and raise slowly) and moderate-to-high random, turbulent flow to keep detritus off the fine branches. Avoid one harsh direct jet.
Why do the branches keep breaking?
