Zooxanthellae are the microscopic symbiotic algae living inside coral tissue that photosynthesise, feed the coral most of its energy, and give it much of its colour.
This partnership is why corals need light at all — the algae are solar panels the coral farms. Stress that breaks the partnership causes the coral to expel them, which is bleaching.
