A protein skimmer uses a column of fine bubbles to pull dissolved organic waste out of the water as foam, before it breaks down into nitrate and phosphate.
It's one of the most effective forms of nutrient export on a reef, though not strictly mandatory — lightly-stocked and nano tanks can run skimmerless on disciplined water changes. It removes waste you'd otherwise have to dilute away.
