Reef Tank Equipment: What You Actually Need

The essentials (start here)
These earn their place on almost every reef tank:
- A clean water source — RO/DI (or bought zero-TDS water). Tap water brings nitrate, phosphate, metals and chlorine that feed algae and stress livestock. This is the single best early investment.
- Marine salt + a refractometer. You can’t manage what you can’t measure; a refractometer reads salinity far more reliably than a swing-arm hydrometer.
- A heater on a controller. Steady temperature matters more than the exact number; a controller stops a stuck heater cooking the tank.
- Flow — one or more powerheads. Water movement keeps detritus suspended and feeds corals.
- Reef test kits. Salinity, ammonia, nitrite, nitrate at minimum; add alkalinity, calcium and magnesium when you keep stony corals.
The upgrades (add when they earn it)
None of these are day-one mandatory — add each when your tank tells you it’s time:
- Protein skimmer — exports waste before it decays, making nutrient control easier on a stocked reef. Great on busy tanks; often unnecessary on small or soft-coral setups run on water changes.
- Sump — a hidden tank of extra water below the display: more volume (more stability), a home for the skimmer and a refugium, and clean looks up top. Lovely to have; AIO and hang-on-back setups work fine without one.
- Auto top-off (ATO) — replaces evaporation with fresh RO/DI automatically, holding salinity steady. A convenience that removes a very common cause of salinity swings.
- Return pump / wavemakers — sized to your system; think varied, turbulent flow rather than a single blast.
- Controller — automates and alarms (temperature, ATO, timers). A safety net, not a starter item.
Flow, without overthinking it
You don’t need to chase one magic turnover number. Aim for varied, turbulent flow with no dead spots, where detritus stays suspended and corals sway gently rather than being sandblasted. Lighting is livestock-driven
Buy lighting for what you’ll actually keep, and buy it when you keep it:
- Fish-only: modest lighting is fine.
- Corals: stronger, reef-appropriate lighting, matched to whether you’re keeping softies, LPS or SPS.
