The turbo snail (Turbo fluctuosa, the Mexican turbo) is the heavy machinery of the cleanup crew — a big, fast, ravenous grazer that can mow through a hair-algae bloom faster than any other snail. That power is also its downside: it's large and clumsy enough to bulldoze unglued frags, and in a spotless tank it can run out of food.

- "More turbos = a cleaner tank forever." They can strip a bloom in days and then starve — buy for an actual algae problem and feed them once it's under control.
- "Turbos are nano-tank snails." They get big and hungry — they belong in larger tanks with room to graze.
Before you buy
- A larger tank (30+ gal) with a real algae supply.
- Glued-down frags — a turbo will bump loose ones.
- A plan to feed nori once the algae's gone.
- A cycled tank; drip-acclimate; never any copper.
Signs something's wrong
A struggling invert is usually telling you about water quality, acclimation, or (for shrimp and crabs) a fresh moult — here's what to watch for:
- Toppled frags or rock — the turbo bumped them; glue things down.
- Shrinking into the shell or inactive in a clean tank — it's starving; offer dried seaweed.
- Empty shell — died from a swing, copper, or starvation.
Never
- Never put a big turbo in a tank full of loose frags.
- Never assume a clean tank feeds it — supplement.
- Never add to an un-cycled tank, dose copper, or drop it straight in.

Are turbo snails good for hair algae?
They're the best snail for it — a big turbo can clear a hair-algae bloom faster than anything else in the cleanup crew. The catch is that once the algae's gone it needs feeding (dried seaweed), or it starves.
Are turbo snails reef-safe?
Yes — they eat algae, not corals. The only real risk is physical: they're large and clumsy and can knock over unglued frags, so secure your corals.
How big do turbo snails get?
