RTN (rapid) and STN (slow) tissue necrosis describe coral tissue dying and sloughing off the skeleton — an SPS emergency that can strip a colony to bare white bone in hours to days.
It's usually triggered by a parameter swing, especially in alkalinity, or by pests or damage. The response is to stabilise the water, frag off healthy tips to save the genotype, and find the cause fast.
