Marine Ich and Velvet: What to Do


🐠 The short version: ich looks like white salt-grain spots; velvet looks like a fine dusty sheen with fast, laboured breathing — and velvet moves fast and kills. The real cure is prevention through quarantine, because the effective treatments (copper, hyposalinity) can’t be used in a reef display — they’d kill your inverts and corals. This is triage guidance to help you recognise and act, not a diagnosis or a prescription.

Telling ich and velvet apart

Both are parasites, both are common, and both are far easier to prevent than cure. The signs (drawn from our sourced care sheets’ vet-flag sections):

  • Marine ich (white spot): distinct white spots like grains of salt scattered over the body and fins; flashing (scratching against rock); increased breathing. It waxes and wanes as the parasite cycles on and off the fish — which fools people into thinking it’s “gone.”
  • Marine velvet: a fine dusty, gold-to-grey velvety sheen, often with very rapid gill-breathing, clamped fins, and fish going off food. Velvet is far faster and deadlier — it can take a whole tank in days.

If you’re unsure which it is, treat it as urgent. Distinguishing them precisely is a job for observation over time or a vet — the point of this guide is to get you recognising trouble and acting, not labelling it.

Why they’re so common

These parasites usually arrive on new fish and explode when fish are stressed. That’s why the classic hotspots are:

  • Skipping quarantine — the single biggest cause; the parasite rides a new fish straight into your display.
  • Ich-magnet speciestangs above all (why a tang needs the right tank); wild-caught fish generally.
  • Stress — undersized tanks, aggression, poor water, rough acclimation. A stressed fish’s immune system can’t hold the parasite off.

The real fix: prevention

Because you can’t safely medicate a reef, the winning strategy is keeping the parasite out:

  1. Quarantine every new fish in a separate tank before it ever touches the display — see the full quarantine guide.
  2. Acclimate gently and keep stress low (right-sized tank, good diet, stable water).
  3. Buy captive-bred where you can — hardier and less likely to carry disease.

Prevention is the whole game here. A disease that’s never introduced never has to be cured.

If it’s already in your display

This is where honesty matters most: you cannot properly treat a reef display. The approach is:

  • Move the fish to a hospital/quarantine tank and treat them there. The established hobby treatments — copper-based medication, hyposalinity, and the tank-transfer method — are done in a bare treatment tank, following the product’s or a vet’s exact instructions. Never dose copper in a reef — it’s lethal to inverts and corals and lingers in rock and sand.
  • Leave the display fishless (fallow) for an extended period so the parasite, with no fish host, dies off. The required fallow time differs between ich and velvet.
  • Don’t rely on reef-safe additives to cure it — they don’t, and the delay lets it spread.

Because dosing and timing must be exact (and get a struggling fish the right help), this is the point to bring in an aquatic or exotics vet — especially if you suspect velvet.

Why do my tangs keep getting ich?

Tangs are famously prone to marine ich, and stress is the trigger - an undersized tank, aggression, or skipping quarantine all push a tang toward an outbreak. The fix is a big calm tank, a strong diet, and strict quarantine of every new tang before it enters the display.
